March Saturday of Service brings joy of Dr. Seuss to NHHR!

Soroptimists and children alike enjoyed our Saturday of Service day at New Haven Home Recovery (NHHR) as we celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday, read to the children, and played the games that Sandra had provided.  When we arrived at 1 p.m. Austin, our host from NHHR, ushered us into the spotlessly clean kitchen and an equally inviting sitting room to begin organizing our bags of goodies.  Soon children began popping their heads around the corner to see what we were up to, and they were followed by curious moms.  By 1:30 or so, we had a half-dozen Soroptimists, that many children, around the table, plus a mom with her 5-month-old baby – all enjoying a Dr. Seuss story, “One Fish, Two Fish.”  There was a 2-year-old boy who, while he was sitting at the table, took two pencils and demonstrated his drumming chops.  Austin, who joined us for the party and who is a professional drummer, having played with the likes of Barry White, was incredulous. “This kid is a natural!” he said.  All this while a 3-year-old danced around the table blowing a birthday horn in everyone’s ears!  Cake and sherbert were happily devoured by children and adults alike and toward the end of the party, we had another mom and her three daughters, including twins, join us for cake and fun.  We left party favors, two bags of donated books, the left-over cake, smiles on the faces of all the kids, and a lot of good cheer.
